Thermal energy can be defined as anything, which includes air or water when warmed directly by sun rays. If you absorb some kind of warmth from sun, while sitting inside but just behind the window, that is when you are using the thermal  energy directly from sun. This is basically the principle that is used for solar hot water heaters and also by passive solar design used in buildings.

PV is the abbreviated term used for photovoltaic. Photo refers to light and the word voltaic is referred to volt, which is one of the units for electrical force. Hence PV is nothing but a process where generation of electricity is done using light. The PV chips are hence designed in such a way that they are used by the solar panels to generate electricity as and when the sun shines.

The photovoltaic solar chips include semiconductors. These are materials which release electrons as they are exposed to the light, basically electricity. The term silicon chips are very commonly heard. They are plenty in sand. Around 98% of the PV cells are made up of this. Now that’s termed as a semi conductor, which is amazing at releasing electricity when it is exposed to sunlight.

PV cells are made by two layers of semi-conductors in the PV solar energy. One of them is positively charged whereas the other one is negative. If both these semi conductors are absorbing light then their electrons get excited. The positively and the negatively charged particles that emerge from the semi conductors then produce volts. It is then when you get more light and more electricity.

A PV solar energy enabled panel can help you to turn on anything such as lights or equipments provided the required number of cells is working fine. Hence large areas should often take up solar panels for delivering the required domestic electricity.
