Who Needs An Education Degree?
An education degree used to be something for anyone in the arts who wanted to "have something to fall back on." Years ago, people got an education degree in order to have another option for work in case their more ambitious career plans did not work. If you studied English to become a writer, and then were not successful, you could still earn a living. In fact, some successful writers - Frank McCourt and Stephen King, to name two - got education degrees or teaching certificates in order to be able to teach. In their cases, of course, they found another job while teaching. Today's education degree is much more than just a "Plan B" however. Today, an education degree is often gained after two or three years of study following your first undergraduate degree in college or university. Today's education degree, however, offers numerous skills that make this degree more flexible than ever. This new flexibility makes an education degree practical for many professions. An education degree today typically focuses on communication skills - including personal communication and multimedia communications with a computer - as well as practical skills learned in the field. Today's education degree often teaches students not only how to teach, but also teaches them about the theories and ideas surrounding teaching. Concepts such as ESL teaching and teaching students with special needs is also taught. There is a new emphasis on making classrooms safe and on imparting life skills as well as academic skills to students. This makes people with an education degree very useful in a number of fields. People with an education degree work not only in schools, but also at universities, overseas, or as private tutors. With an education degree, it is even possible to teach corporate skills to business people or create teaching tools such as textbooks, seminars, and educational software. People with education degrees routinely lead classes in all sorts of environments, write about education, and even develop on-line teaching tools. As our society becomes more and more concerned with lifelong learning and upgrading of skills, an education degree gives students a number of career options in very wide areas of education. This makes education a fast-growing field. With a good degree from an accredited school, you too can capitalize on this growing career opportunity.
