The aquarium also provides information about Australia's tropical northern river system, which is subject to monsoons from November through April and is dry the rest of the year. As a specimen of this region, the giant cuttlefish, largest of its kind in the world and fairly intelligent, is on display. Southern ocean conditions are also studied at the aquarium, along with seal and shark residents like the gray nurse shark. The northern ocean exhibits include 2.6 million litres of the Great Barrier Reef, the largest organism-made reef that supports about 1,500 species of fish and 400 types of coral.
