The New York Times
The New York Times is a liberal newspaper that is published in the city of New York but read throughout the country and even the world. It is not unusual to visit a city in a foreign country and have the Times delivered to your hotel room upon request. The paper holds a great deal of prestige and authority although its views are fairly outspoken and often critical of conservative ideas or movements. The Times offers extensive overseas coverage on international issues. For example, recent stories covered the Iran election and continue to provide updates on the Iraqi War that sometimes seems to point a finger of blame at President Bush. This newspaper is owned by The New York Times Company, a leading media corporation, with 2004 revenues of $3.3 billion. In 2005 it was ranked first place on Fortune's selections of "America's Most Admired Companies." Journalists for the paper have received 113 Pulitzer prizes, which is more than any other publication. The company also publishes the International Herald Tribune and the Boston Globe, among others. Holdings also include eight affiliate television stations and two New York radio stations, as well as 40 Websites one of which is About.com. Goals of the newspaper focus on enhancing a modern quality of social life by collecting and dispersing quality news and entertainment information. Readers can learn about upcoming events, including celebrity programming and interviews. The Times offers a comprehensive array of services like those provided in other media publications. These include interviews, op ed pieces, feature stories, weather, classified ads, business, technology, education, and health sections, to name a few. A recent sports column on poker was added. The New York Times publishes a book list to feature reviews of new publications and the top ten reading list.
