Info On Esl And Ged Software And Materials

Q: We are looking for software (Mac and/or MS-DOS software, videodiscs, or CD-ROMs) for use with adults and students in ESL (English as a second language) and GED programs. Please let me know what you think about software and other materials, good or bad. What are some success stories with people in these programs?

A:One of the summer issues of _Technology and Learning_ magazine devoted the better part of its text to an evaluation of computer-based ESL materials. This included narrative text, listing and evaluating of particular programs, and comparison charts. The issue could help you identify major programs and provide key points on which to compare them The CALL interest section of TESOL publishes an annual software list for Amiga, Apple II, Mac and DOS machines. Program names short descriptions and contact addresses are given. For more info contact TESOL: 1600 Cameron Street, Suite 300 Alexandria VA 22314 (703) 836-0774. (Whoops - in case you don't know, TESOL is Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) There are loads of ESL things on the net. Try the CELIA gopher at LaTrobe University in Australia or the IBM Kiosk for Education under Gophers by Subject. USDE also has some relevant stuff on their gopher in the same place
