Q: What is Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)?
Bipolar disorder is the new name for what used to be called manic
depression.
It better describes the exaggerated swings of mood from one extreme to
another characteristic of this illness.
People with bipolar disorder suffer from recurrent episodes of elevated mood
(mania) and depression.
A:In severe cases of depression, it may be necessary to admit the person to
hospital for a time.
Mania presents different problems - it is often difficult to persuade people
in a manic state that they need treatment. In some situations it may be
necessary to commit the person to hospital if the symptoms are severe.
During acute or severe attacks of mania, anti-psychotic drugs and lithium
carbonate are used. The anti-psychotic drugs calm the manic excitement and
control symptoms; the lithium is used for its mood-stabilising properties.
Lithium is also used as a preventive measure as it helps control mood swings
and reduces the frequency and severity of attacks of both mania and
depression.
Psychotherapy is used in conjunction with medication to help those with the
condition understand the illness and its effect on their lives.
With access to appropriate treatment and support most people with bipolar
disorder can lead full and productive lives.
I was diagnosed bipolar once.
later they decided it was something else.
so when I read this, I couldn't figure out what they were talking about so I
looked at the header for a clue. I thought I had an idea then as I read it as
"bi-polar FARTS!"
I've spent too much time today looking at this computer
screen...I must be addicted...can't even read correctly any more!
