Acid Reflux Over The Counter

Q: My ten year old son has GERD and a pretty bad case at that . He has had an upper G.I that confirmed GERD . He at one time lost eight pounds in a couple of months because every time he ate he would become sick to his stomach. He see's a Gastorinterologist ( SP) for hsi GERD . He also had what he refered to as sour burps alot of the time . He never cleared his throught though . I can see how GERD might make one feel an urge to do so ,if the bile is in his esophigist (spelling) it may be burning it and causing irritation .My sons upper GI revieled that his esophogist was very inflamed . My son tried many of the over the counter drugs but to no avail . He has been on Prilosec off and on for quiet some time . When he first started taking Prilosec it took a week before he noticed improvement, after that time he was able to eat without becoming sick to his stomach . Prilosec has been helpfull in relieving his GERD but he started gaining wait while on it . A kind of water wieght, he looked swollen . He wanted to stop taking it to see if he would loose this water look weight gain . He did, but his GERD was back full force , he is now taking Pepcid and St. John's Wort. St. John's wort is helpful in the treatment of mild depression and anxiety , my son has these along with his TS, OCD and GERD. Any way, St.John's seems to be helping his GERD as well , I read that some people use it to help with Ulcers . Prilosec is a great drug, it works wonder . The only bad thing I can say is it can cause weight gain in some people and there has not been long term studies done on childern taking it . It's a pretty new drug as drugs go , long term use/ effect in childern there isnt any info regarding this . You may want to pick a search engine and type in Prilosec , I'm sure you'll find lots of info . I may be wrong but I bet your sons throught clearing is a Tic. It could have started as a need to clear his throught of bile but has now turned into a tic, why don't you ask him ? My son knows what his tics are and yours may as well. Does anyone here have any comment about the problem my son is having with over the counter drugs.?

A:I'm 29 years old and have been experiancing Tourette's symptoms since I was a child to a greater or lesser degree. The most damaging of symptoms I've experianced was a convulsing of my abdominal area combined with twisting of my torso causing burping/ acid reflux. I started with this when I was about 19 and I Ignored the persistant heartburn created by this until 2 years ago when I had to go to emergency for food being stuck in my esophagus. The acid reflux over the years caused scarring of the esophagus and a weakened lower esophogeal spincter. I have had numerous scopes, x-rays and 3 dialitations to restore normal swallowing function. I don't have to many problems with my abdominal area, nor with tourette's in general, now. I watch what I eat and am taking propulsid and zantac (prescription str.) to control my acid reflux which now occurs when merely bending at the waist. I would recommend anyone with similar problems to take zantac or something similar to control hearburn if this tic cannot be controlled or channelled elsewhere, before permanent damage can be done. with regards,
