Non-teflon Cookware Question

Q: Hi All! After having been bird-less for quite some time now, I am soon receiving a truley spectacular pair of Solomon Island Eclectus (parrots). I am desperate for help choosing new cookware, as I now have a huge collection of pots and pans of different brands...all teflon coated. I am not sure if stainless would be best, copper maybe, I need help!! Husband says to keep it under $500...Any advice Greatly appreciated!

TIA ~heather Teflon is not the problem you think it is under normal circumstances. It is only overheating that may cause a problem. Similarly, any pot or pan that is overheated my cause fumes that will cause respiratory problems in birds. There are a couple of web sited that have complete information on the subject, starting with DuPont, the makers of Teflon. Keep the birds away from the kitchen and be sure you are using a ventilated hood while cooking, especially on the stove top. The most direct way is to go to Poor heat transfer, usually sold very thin so it develops hot spots. Adding a thick copper disk to the bottom helps, esp for skillets, but I've found that disk-bottomed cookware, at least the two brands of pots I have, has a hot "ring" at the place the disk stops. When reducing liquids in my stainless skillet with the disk bottom, this is verified by cooking at just below a simmer and noticing the simmering bubbles at the juncture, with no simmering in the middle or out further. Anodized aluminum is lighter and has faster, more uniform heat transfer. Stainless is a superior coating to tin for copper pots, though. And is the prefered material for pressure cookers.
