Is There Any Decent Dishwasher Safe Cookware?

Q: I do most of the cooking at our house, and after I cook, my wife usually offers to clean the kitchen. I want new cookware for Christmas, but my wife absolutely insists on something that can go in the dishwahser. Is there any decent cookware that can go in the dishwasher? I know your not supposed to put Calphalon, etc. in the dishwasher. What happens if you do? Does the diswasher ruin it somehow? Shorten its life? Really doesn't hurt that much?

A: Le Creuset is certainly dishwasher-safe. Good choices in this line would be dutch ovens, the buffet casserole, and saucepans. Sauteeing isn't what these things do best, as they are enamel-on-iron and thus you don't have fast control over the heat. For things like saute pans, omelet pans, etc., I like Calphalon, but I wouldn't put it in the dishwasher. If dishwasher-compatible is important, I'd look at some of the stainless-steel clad offerings from people like All-Clad... I just don't like cooking on stainless.
