Granit Cookware?
Q: Anyone come across some info/specs or else has experience using a cookware line called GRANIT ....maybe manufactured in France? There was a husband/wife team at the Lonsdale Quay here in North Vancouver showing and selling this cookware. Looked interesting but definitely PRICY...but this is not what got my interest...rather it was their description of the manufacturing process. Now get this: Supposedly this cookware is made up of ACTUAL granite powder that has been bonded {?} together and 'formed' like cast iron....even requiring 'seasoning' before usage. The material wall thickness is something like 7mm (1/4"+) with a similar thickness of Aluminum base bonded to it. The handles are supposed to be made of ceramic and able to withstand temps above 500degrees {I didn't catch if that was supposed to be farenheit or celcius). The lids are clear Pyrex glass with similar knob material as the handles. The cooking surface is supposed to be stickfree...and they even advocate NO water, oil or fat usage in cooking the food....and because the surface is the same as the the body material it's virtually scratch resistant ALL THE WAY THROUGH. If this stuff IS for real then I'm SERIOUSLY going to look into this...BUT it DOES seems to be too good to be true!....especially at those prices!...YIKES.
A: This makes it sound like you need to use it at low temps. If it can handle High heat it may not be too bad. But remember this product may drop out of the market and if you need service it may not be available. And I do not think rock conducts heat well. I bet it will cook like cast iron. "When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It make the neighbor's dog run to the end of his chain and gag himself" But I think that the salespeople are NOT quite being upfront with the manufacturing process or else they don't know what they are talking about. It looks like (again the handout) the Granit aspect of this cookware is a coating.... "Cleaning is effortless with the Granit Stone compound injected into the surface of the cookware. The inert properties, prevents residue from sticking to the surface even at unusually high temperatures. Wash with mild detergent." ...as opposed to being the body material. I did a search on the 'Net for "Granit"...got all kinds of 'stone' sites (ie. Granite...!) but nothing in the way of 'cookware'. The salespeople do indicate an email address so I'm going to fire off a request for more information than a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper. Hopefully they do have more...especially something from the manufacturer (in France), because at THOSE prices [eg. 28cm Saute Pan + Lid = $250.80 CAN.], as attractive the cookware may look like, I'm going to be a bit MORE cautious before committing good money to questionable wares.

My husband bought me some of this cookware at the PNE in Vancouver, B.C. a number of years ago. The 8" pan has the bottom peeling off it and I can't reach anybody representing this Granite company. They were supposed to be made in France and have a lifetime guarantee. VERY EXPENSIVE. I think my husband paid something like $650 for the 3 saucepans. I'm most disappointed with the small one. The other 2 seem to be holding up OK.
