High Quality Cookware

Q: So, my better-half and I are having this debate of sorts - he is convinced that when one has high quality cookware, particularly stainless steel cookware, that the dishwasher is *much* better for it than hand-washing. He asserts that the cookware will last much longer, and suffer less wear-and-tear. In fact, he said that hand-washing will cause it to be scratched, and not last as long. This seems completely counter-intuitive to me (although it does seem a good argument for a dishwasher!) Plus, many times a dishwasher cannot deal with the things which are baked onto cookware! Any insight, and input, into this topic would be greatly appreciated!

A: I dragged hubby in with me to buy my scanpan and had the sale guy tell him the company philosphy about dishwashers. Simply put, it voids the lifetime warrentee! Bad idea! if the pans are good, they shouldn't be that hard to clean up...IMHO at least. All cookware will become scratched with use, but in no way will minor scratches affect performance, or shorten it's useful lifespan. Sheldon ( Who prefers hand washing EVERYTHING!. ) Well, I don't see how either hand or machine washing could be anywhere near as hard on cookware as cooking is. I suppose with some kinds of non-stick or enamel surfaces, you might want to be careful, when cooking, washing or stacking, not to chip the surface. However, the _stainless steel_ parts of the cookware should be impervious to dishwasher cleaning. I have an old set of stainless Revere Ware that I use constantly and put in the dishwasher, as well, and the only effect the dishwasher has had is that it has dulled the bakelite handles over the almost 20 years I've had this set. And that cosmetic problem is a small price to pay, in my book, for the convenience of using the dishwasher. The only nonstick- surface pan I own is a Circulon skillet, which the instructions said to handwash. However, I put it in the dishwasher at least half the time, anyway, and it still works fine after almost 8 years. The only pans I consistently handwash are my cast iron pans or my stockpot, that's just too big for the dishwasher.
