Cookware: Cheap And Safe?

Q: I've only been reading this newsgroup for about a week, so please don't flame me into submission if this topic is old hat.... I'm looking for suggestions for "safe" cookware that is reasonably priced (keep in mind that I'm a college student). I'm tired of non-stick pans that lose their coating (I know this can't be healthy), but I'm really not too keen on having everything I cook stick to the pan. Have I just gotten bad non-stick pans (likely), and if so does anyone have suggestions for pans that don't loose their coatings? Or should I try something else? I guess at this point I'm willing to spend a little more than I probably can afford to get pans that aren't flaking nasty compounds into my food, especially if I'm reasonably confident that I'll have these pans for years to come.

Buy a starter set of Farberware, about 7-9 pieces, about $50. The set is often on sale at major department stores, at various times throughout the year. They will not lose their coatings, they have none, unquestionably, they are "safe"! They should last you long enough to pass to your childern when they go to college, so, at around $2 per year, this is reasonably priced.
