What Is This Machine?

Q: See it here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180355424577 I don't see how it works. Could it be a percolator? I suppose someone might put a steam wand on a percolator.

A: It's a 3-cup steam-powered espresso (some would insist "moka") maker, the water being heated by an alcohol lamp. Heat causes the pressure to build, forcing the water thru the grounds and ultimately out thru the 3 tubes at the end . . . P.S. Home espresso/moka pots have come in a real variety of shapes and designs. This website has photos of an incredible number of them from the author's own collection: http://caffettiera.altervista.org/collezione.php The one you're inquiring about is shown here: http://caffettiera.altervista.org/caffettiera.php?ID=22
