Media Asset Management

Media Asset Management is also referred in short as MAM. It refers to assets management tasks and solutions for audio, video, music and other media management tasks. It is also one of the sub categories of Digital Asset Management which deals with distribution of digital assets. MAM is software function through computer software and hardware that enables it performs a wide range of functions. It performs functions such as the storage and retrieval of files, exportation, maintenance and providing back-up.

MAM software performs its tasks in a very systematic approach. Firstly, it uses the asset metadata to access the description depth. Metadata usually varies according to the design and the system user. It determines the method of digital storage of the asset. There are various templates available in the market for metadata with the most commonly used being Dublin Core and PB core. MAM is essentially important for any media industry especially for advertising, photography, videos and other media content. It is today a necessary tool for presentation of high resolutions, design and general presentation that is close to reality. Musicians also find this important in the production of musical pieces.

MAM usually contains an essence factor. Essence is responsible for high resolution and presentation. Lower resolution of essence is called a ‘proxy copy’ which is usually generated using transcoders. Metadata is used to describe the proxy copies and the trancoders and decoders used for managing and storing the asset.

The growth of the media industry has translated to the need for high technological input. There are various MAM software providers in the market. They provide various application services such as training, sharing of catalogue, and other metadata applications necessary for the industry.
