Any Advice On Starting A Small Business

Q: I'am an accountant who is considering starting my own small business. I would like to begin by attracting a few small clients to do all of their accounting. How do I begin? Any advice. Please email me at rdaley.nbnet.nb.ca

A: I did the same thing (though I'm not an accountant, just a bookkeeper with alot of years of experience). The way I got started was to go to some medium sized accounting firms and ask if they would contract out the bookkeeping work for some of their smaller clients. Some firms said no, others said yes - it was a little bit of hit and miss, but I managed to find one or two that gave me a chance with some of their newer clients. The work for me was the basic bookkeeping stuff. Setting up an accounting package for them and then doing the day to day bookkeeping. Most of the clients I got were small businesses themselves and I could do their bookkeeping in only a couple of hours a week. I was amazed at how quickly the networking began and before I knew it this client had passed my name on to someone they knew, etc. etc. Being an accountant you would be able to offer more services than I could - ie. tax preparation and financial statements. Also I found it did help to have a part time job at first as well, until I had enough clients to support myself on without the help of a part-time position.
