Auction Shipping - Pay Attention To The Cost

The cost of auction shipping is an important piece of knowledge whether you're a buyer or seller. Online auctions have certainly reduced many of the global barriers that once controlled events such as auctions. Instead of being limited only to those auctions that happen in your own neighborhood, you can now bid on items offered for auction around the world at any of the many online auction websites. But submitting the winning bid isn't the end of the auction experience. You still have to get that item to your home (or wherever you plan to have it shipped). With some items, auction shipping simply isn't a big deal. Small items that can be easily packaged and mailed are sent with a modicum of fuss and expense. But the opposite is true when you purchase large, bulky items, or when you purchase items from a seller in another country. In those cases, auction shipping costs may actually be much more than the bid you placed. Rugs are a good example. You can find sellers of quality rugs on several of the online auction sites. These rugs can typically be purchased at a price much less than you'd expect retail cost to be. But the auction shipping to get the rug to your house can be very expensive. Before you bid, take time to consider what the cost of auction shipping is going to be. Don't overlook the potential for additional costs for handling. The person offering the sale may add a fee for packaging the item. If you're the seller, be sure to take auction shipping costs into consideration when you post your items. Clearly state that the buyer will be responsible for those expenses or be prepared to pay them yourself. If you don't have that stipulation in your auction description, you may find that it actually costs more than you made on the auction to get the item to the new owner.
