Apparel Retail

You can buy your clothes off the back of a truck, but why would you want to? First of all you will be missing the whole experience of shopping, which is entertainment in itself. Secondly, where will you return the item tomorrow or next week? Chances are that the truck will be gone by next week and refunds or exchanges are not exactly freely given in those alleyways where you bought it. But the most important reason for buying retail is choice. There are millions of choices for Americans to make when shopping for clothing and apparel. There are downtown shops and trendy boutiques, big box shopping or large suburban shopping centers. There are variety stores that offer all season apparel as well as seasonal shops and specialty offerings. There are also discount and factory outlets, thrift stores and vintage or period clothing merchandisers. Those choices just moved out of our neighborhood and around the world over the last ten years with the explosion of virtual shopping and electronic shopping malls. Some experts estimate that at least one third of all Americans have placed an order for an item on the Internet, and many of those items have been articles of apparel. You can find just about anything you want on the World Wide Web, and some things you may not want to find.

If that happens just close the window and move on. But what you do find on the Internet is usually at a price that is substantially lower than a traditional store, mostly because they don’t have the overhead that is associated with having a bricks and mortar storefront operation. Whether you choose to shop down the block or at a real or virtual shopping mall, you have a world of choices thanks to the retail system. If you can’t find what you’re looking for after all your shopping and searches you still have a choice. To go without or make it yourself. If you do that then maybe you might want to set a little retail operation up for yourself. Retail, it’s the American way.
