What Is Structure Clothing

Structure clothing can be said to be any item of clothing that is made to some kind of structure. However you could also argue that all clothing is made to a plan, therefore all items of clothing are structure clothing. In traditional methods, you would choose your material and cut out the designated parts in accordance with the pattern, therefore working to a structure. Clothing is often bought in shops today however, and you rarely find as many dressmakers as in previous years, so many people do not know how clothes are manufactured and exactly what structure clothing is. A classic example of structure clothing would be underwear. If you look at any under wired bra, you can see where the structure clothing element of the garment comes in. Items such as these have been made with a particular purpose in mind, one of support and definition. That is why wires have been used in this piece of structure clothing. Although people are familiar with structure clothing, nobody calls it by that particular name any longer. People could get offended by the term structure clothing, especially when talking about underwear as it implies that the items are manipulating the body. In actual fact, the under wear items that are structure clothing are intended to sculpt the body into a more flattering shape, however when people are buying these items, they could find it embarrassing to admit to needing structure clothing, which is partly the reason that this term is no longer used. Students who are now studying to be fashion designers may use the term structure clothing, particularly in relation to old fashioned garments. Many girdles and old fashioned bras which were very much shaped like cones can be referred to as structure clothing because here it is obvious that they were manipulating the female figure into a fashionable shape of the time. One thing is certain however, the term structure clothing today is rarely heard and is not discussed in the retail industry as a method to sell to customers.
