Women of ancient Egyptian wore dresses that hung straight down; these dresses would either have one or two straps holding them up. Egyptian women wore lots of jewelry and makeup, to these women it was something that was necessary and it was wrong to not wear these items. Even the poor would find a way to obtain makeup and jewelry to wear. Since the climate in Egypt is a hot one, the Egyptians made their clothing from lightweight materials that were made available to them in their land. This was mostly linen they made from a plant fiber that grows in large quantities by the banks of the Nile. All of the clothing that was made in Egypt was made by the women there. Rather they weaved the material in a shop or sewed the material into garments, women handled all of this. They made Egyptian clothes for everyone from the ordinary people, to the pharaoh's kilt, to the beautiful and decorative dresses of the queens. Egyptian clothes made a lot of changes though the years, but still had the basic look with simple sewing of the sides while pieces of material were draped and pined in place by jewelry or belts. At one point they started using more material in their clothing making the dresses longer and fuller in style, some would have elbow length sleeves that were very wide. Even with the changes in fashion the climate still demands light weight material so linen is still used in the making of clothes today. It was also discovered some point though the centuries that cotton trees grew in a part of Egypt and a new material was introduced to the Egyptians. At this time cotton became popular in the making of Egyptian clothing also. It is very fascinating to look at Egyptian clothes; since the beginning they were always very attractive. The women of Egypt could take something simple and add their decorations to it and have a beautiful and elegant dress. Today when we want a costume that really stands out, we still look for Egyptian clothes for their style and beauty.
