Woman's Wedding Ring Choices ?
Q: For the wedding ring (not the engagement ring), which do women
prefer and find that they like more... a gold band or a diamond
wrap? My fiance and I are picking out wedding rings in a few
weeks, and I have had my eye on a sapphire diamond wrap, but
I notice that more women wear a gold band instead. My cousin
is actually getting both (but I think that is a little extravagant).
My fiance says that either looks good to him. So I was curious..
what is the preference between the two?
A:All I know from my own background is that in Jewish weddings, it's necessary
to have a ring with no stone in it for the ring to be, er, kosher. No one
has ever explained to me why this is... Anyway, when my folks got married,
the best man handed over his own wedding band for the ceremony, and my mother
put on her "real" wedding band (a diamond wrap) at the reception.
The explanation I was given is that the ring should be valued because of
its symbolic meaning, and not as a piece of jewelry (with precious gems to
increase its value).
By dismond wrap do you mean diamonds just on top, or all the
way around? I hear the ones just on top have a tendency to
turn around. On the other hand the ones all around can catch
on things, pinch, and get grimy.
Ask yourself, what is most compatible with your tastes and
your lifestyle? If you're the sort who works with your hands,
bakes homemade bread alot, scrabbles over rocks, etc, then a
simpler ring (that's easier to care for, and less to worry
about) might be better for you. On the other hand, if you
don't do much dirty-work with your hands, and prefer more
sparkle, then a wrap might be more to your liking.
Bands are relatively inexpensive, so you might consider
getting two wedding bands. I have a plain gold comfortfit
band that I wear sometimes (often on my right hand, in fact)

(My husband's wedding ring is a plain gold comfortfit band
that matches mine. Both his and my comfortfit are inscribed.
