The San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are the city’s professional football team. The team was founded in 1946 when they began as a part of the All-American Football Conference. Four years after they were founded, in 1950, the team joined the National Football League when the two leagues merged. The team’s colors are red and gold with black trim, and their name is a reference to the California gold rush of the 1800’s. The San Francisco 49ers were the first professional sports team to exist on the west coast, and San Francisco is the only city in which the team has existed. The San Francisco 49ers have had quite a successful past, winning a total of five Super Bowls during their history. The team has been the home of many football greats, including Joe Montana, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Walsh and most recently Steve Young. During the 1990’s, the team was haunted by corruption scandals involving owner Eddie DeBartolo and his connection to a Mississippi riverboat casino.
