The New York Yankee Team

If you like sports or know something about them, you will surely know something about the New York Yankees. The focus of criticism and legends as well as a solid fan base, the Yankees team is one of the chief landmarks of New York culture. This major league baseball team resides in the Bronx, New York, where their home field is Yankee Stadium, although they are expected to move to a new stadium by 2009. The team plays in the Eastern Division of the American League. They have won 26 of 39 World Series games, creating a monumental record. The team was started in 1901 in Maryland, but by 1903 had moved to New York. Babe Ruth played with the team for a time before being traded. Following several decades of success, the Yankees hit a slump in the 1980s and early 1990s, due in part perhaps to spending a lot of money on free agent players. When George Steinbrenner was placed on suspension and the team turned its attention to developing existing talent rather than

buying new players, the high scores began to return. By 1996 they had again won the World Series. Since then the Yankees have won the Series thrice and are again building a global reputation as a team to be reckoned with. Today the Yankees enjoy a solid reputation in New York and baseball history. They continue to compete aggressively and make good showings in their league. What the future holds is anybody’s guess, but if the managers and fans have their way, the team will again climb to the top of its league and stay there for some time to come. If you happen to be in New York when they play, you won’t want to miss the chance of seeing a game, which is a true New York cultural event.
