Texas Attorney General

The attorney general in all states generally have the same responsibilities. There are usually different attorney generals for every state which are usually appointed by the governor. In Texas, the current attorney general is Greg Abbott. The attorney general is basically the lawyer to the people of Texas and some of his responsibilities as stated by the Texas Constitution include: defending the laws and the constitution of Texas, representing the state during legal matters and litigations approve public bond issues In order for the Texas attorney general to fulfill his responsibilities, he must serve as the legal councilor to all of the boards and agencies that make up the state of Texas’ statutes. He must also sit as an ex-officio member of the state’s commissions and he must also defend any challenges that are made to the state laws and lawsuits that are laid against the state and any of the state’s employees. Right now, the Texas statutes have almost 2000 references that are made toward the attorney general. It just shows you how many roles the attorney general has taken on throughout the years. As well as dealing with the things that are prescribed by the constitution, the Texas attorney general has to file civil lawsuits that are referred by other state agencies and in some cases, the attorney general can act upon his own jurisdiction and choose to prosecute any law violations. Most of the time however, the attorney general stays out of these matters unless the prosecutor asks him to. Even though the Texas attorney general is not allowed to offer any legal advice or represent a private individual,

he is there to serve and protect the rights of all of the state’s people through the use of the state’s many divisions and agencies. Anything that benefits the people of the state as a whole such as: enforcing health safety, educational outreach programs, consumer regulations, Protecting senior rights and the disabled. enforce the child support regulations, Enforce Crime Victim’s Compensation fund.
