See A Hawaii Volcano

Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, offers an exciting invitation to tourists from all over the world. Its 333,000 acres climb from sea level more than two miles to the top of an active volcano. Kilauea Crater is probably Hawaii’s best-known volcano site. Located in Volcano Park, the crater attracts thousands of visitors each year who thrill at the chance of seeing this natural wonder close up. Kilauea is the world’s most active volcano and provides scientists with information about the formation of the Hawaiian Islands. Mauna Loa is the world’s highest volcano at 13,677 feet. The national park service has designed half the park area as a natural reserve, which is available for visitor camping and hiking. Located on Big Island, the park is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Visitor centers operate daily but close in the evening. A 25-minute film explores the dynamic birth and growth of Hawaii’s famous volcanoes. Many visitors come to the park to see an active volcano. You can view lava streams from a safe distance of at least ¼ mile, but ask the ranger on duty for specific guidelines. Avoid VOG, which is volcanic gas emissions that can be toxic and cause breathing problems. It also is important to stay off the bench area, which is where recent lava flows have solidified to build up new land but remains unstable. These areas can cave in suddenly leading to human injury or death. It is best to watch at a distance,

using binoculars if necessary, as lava streams enter the ocean. Hiking on petrified lava is tricky and difficult. It is important to wear firm shoes and cover your body in case you fall. Hard lava contains silica, which is like glass and can cause sharp cuts. There are no first aid stations or other amenities in the volcano park hiking area, so take along first aid and plenty of water to drink, as well as sunscreen, as it can become warm under the sun. A volcano provides an exciting glimpse of nature in action. If you decide to make the park one of your stops while in Hawaii, observe the safety guidelines and avoid taking unnecessary risks in order to have a safe and fun time.
