It was originally built in the 27 BC, and it was a feat of then-modern architecture. After the original structure was destroyed by fire in 80 AD, it was rebuilt in 125 AD. The building was erected as a temple to the Roman gods, but was eventually used as a church after the Christian conversion of the Empire.

The current Pantheon building has been in continuous use since its erection in the second century. The Catacombs of Rome are another ancient Roman structure that you should visit on your Rome sightseeing trip. The Catacombs were used as burial places during the Roman Empire. The first catacombs were carved into rock outside of the city, as Roman law stated that the dead could no buried within the city limits of Rome. The Catacombs are a series of tunnels and passages that run along old Roman roads, and you can walk through them during your visit. These amazing structures will surely fill you with awe, and also leave you with an eerie connection to the past inhabitants of Rome.
