Response To My Color Match Problem On My Business Card Layout...

Q: Response to My Color Match Problem on my Business Card Layout... I'll try to answer a few more questions from the responses that I received. When I say I am a newbie, I mean that in the ultimate sense. I have no graphics design experience and I am unfamiliar with a lot of the terminology used. For instance, "spot color", "CMYK", and "post script" mean slightly more to me than Latin does. I have taken the good advice from a local print shop to stick with CMYK colors, PERIOD. He said this would ensure good color reproduction regardless of screen/printer irregularities. To my understanding, my choice of TruMatch colors was done out of convenience and also because I understand TruMatch colors to be CMYK colors. It was just easier for me to sift through a pallet of colors and pick the ones I like with some confidence that I would have a reproducible color system. The printer I use is your basic low end consumer brand - an Epson 860. I'm using Illustrator 9.0 on a Mac G4 with OS9 if that is useful info. Let me be more specific with where my colors vary. I have a logo that consists of original that was drawn and colored in freehand and then combined with standard text provided with Freehand. When I combine the logo with text (for instance, two horizontal crescents enclosing some text), the color of the artwork and the text differ even though I've selected the same TruMatch colors for both. Is this the problem - a raster image mixed with text? I've tried to make sure that the artwork and text have

the same color options checked. In some of the text in my logo, I've tried to change the color of specific letters to the same color of the artwork, but can't get this to print correctly either. I understand that I am not to trust either my monitor or my printer when I am creating my drawing. That is a big step! Is there a book I can by with CMYK colors that I can trust independently from my system? Also, where can I go on the web to learn about "spot print", "post script", etc...?
