Question While Waiting To Be A Citizen ???
Q: My husband & I are currently permanent residents of Canada. We sent in our citizenship application forms a month back. My husband has now received a very good job offer from a firm in New York. (9 month contract position) If he were to accept this offer and move to New York will he have to forget about his Canadian citizenship application, or will the application be processed as long as he appears for his test. I will be staying back here. Does that help him in any way?
A: -He needs to maintain his Canadian permanent residence until after he has gone through the entire application process and has been "sworn in" as a Canadian citizen. If he loses his status by abandoning Canada as his primary place of residence, his citizenship application will become null and void. Once he's been sworn in as a Canadian citizen, he can move away from Canada without risking loss of citizenship. But not before then. I would strongly recommend to your husband that he should discuss his situation with an experienced immigration lawyer in Canada before he decides to accept the job offer. -Possibly, if this helps strengthen his assertion that he has not abandoned his Canadian permanent residence during his stay abroad. Again, I believe your husband really needs to discuss matters with a good immigration lawyer before making any plans.
