Publishing Companies

Getting your manuscript picked up by most traditional publishing is a difficult task indeed as any author will tell you. It could take years before you get accepted to a publishing company. Traditional publishing companies are extremely picky about who they take on because they invest a lot of money in the printing and marketing of your work. Because of this difficulty in getting a foot in the door, many authors is looking to self publish or go through a POD vanity company which is much easier. However, most writer know that they would much rather go through a traditional publishing company than any other if they want the real notoriety or acclaim that being published offers. The key to giving you the best chance possible with traditional publishing companies is to do a lot of research on what the companies are looking for. You should not begin looking for a publishing company until your manuscript is finished to perfection. This means not to look for publishing companies until you are completely finished with the editing of your book or novel. Once you have completed your novel you have to look for publishing that are looking for the type of books that you are writing. If your book is in a specific genre, it is best to make sure that the publishing company is looking for that type of book because it will save you a lot of time and money later. You should also research their submission guidelines and follow them to the letter because publishing companies will not even look at a submission if the guidelines were not followed. Even if the publishing company’s guidelines do net go into detail about submissions I will tell you about the general

process. Your initial query to a publishing company should include a query and synopsis (1 page) of your work. You should not send the manuscript unless they ask you for it. If your manuscript is requested, follow the sending procedure as well. If they have requested you manuscript, then you have already generated interest. You don’t want to ruin that by sending the work in improperly or without making sure that all of the final editing is finished. If you want to see your work in bookstores, the best thing that you can do is to be persistent and never give up. This is a world where rejection is a major factor. Accept that, and keep on going. Sooner or later you are bound to get picked up.
