Network support for your computer system can take a variety of forms. It pays to have reliable support, along with backups that you can access on an emergency basis. Here are some recommendations to keep in mind. 1. Keep the computer owner’s manual on hand. Stash it on a nearby bookshelf or in a desk drawer for quick reference. When you have time, it is probably a good idea to glance over the manual, or at least to browse the sections that have greatest applicability to the type of work you do on the computer. If you don’t understand the manual, seek help from someone who does. It won’t do you any good if left unread. 2. Consult with your network administrator. This is especially pertinent if you are concerned about an office computer versus a home computer. Arrange one or more meetings to go over the basic functions of your PC. Arrange a list of questions for the meeting so you are prepared. Get a feel for the amount of time an administrator wants to be involved. Should you get in touch with a slight concern or wait until something really big happens? Either way, it’s important to team with your administrator as a resource person. 3. Get additional training.
