Network Performance

Is your computer’s network performance up to par? Perhaps you aren’t sure, especially if your experience is confined largely to your PC. But if you have noticed changes, disruptions, or problems, it is important to report these to your system administrator, check them out yourself, or consult a service technician for help. Your computer should operate efficiently most of the time. Granted, there will be times when Internet access is unavailable due to weather problems, crowded conditions, or a temporary lapse of service. But if you notice that your computer keeps losing the Internet connection, or if your computer is “kicked off” for no clear reason, tell the system administrator. The same goes for an extremely slow connection or a spate of emails from unknown sources. If these things happen, it could be that a virus, a Trojan, a worm, or another intruder has hit your equipment. The type of software you install also may impact network performance. Although most programs are intended to enhance PC operations, some applications may slow or dull your computer, making it more difficult to operate. If you notice that a new application has had a negative impact on your PC, consult the owner’s manual or the administrator

to find out if this is normal and acceptable. Network performance should help, not hinder, the way you get things done. You can ensure that the system works smoothly by cleaning it periodically, having the connections checked, and running security reviews. Don’t wait for a problem to occur. Head off invader attacks by protecting your equipment before something happens. Just as you would never dream of leaving your house unlocked and assume a burglar won’t enter, you should not leave your PC vulnerable to invasion from unwanted viruses, spam, or hackers. Keep everything up to date, clean, and functioning in good order, and your incidence of problems should decrease accordingly.
