Q: In what way is establishment of a competency standard to be
considered "control"? I know you would prefer that everyone
go through life without any responsibility for their choices
(and make it a crime against "liberty" for someone to point
out a fault) but get serious for a second: How does it serve
society OR the individuals concerned for their "education" to
have so little relevance to that of their neighbors that they
cannot write a simple declarative sentence, fully comprehend
the wording of a "plain language" warranty, or balance their
checkbook? NC high schools and colleges crank out hundreds
of thousands of people lacking those basic skills every year
- and every one of them has fulfilled all of the states'
requirements for the sheepskin.
In fact, with national competency standards in place, there is
nothing to prevent home schools from issuing fully-recognized
advanced degrees: pass the rigorous assessments of competency,
and you get the diploma. Fail the exams, and you don't.
Simple, eh?
