Maternity Clothes

Maternity clothes have changed drastically over the years. There was a time when as soon as a woman became in the family way she would gather all the maternity clothes she could get her hands on. Some of these clothes were new and most were lent or given from family members or friends. The styles have changed whereas the smock has given way to wearing nothing what so ever to cover the belly. In this era it is not unusual to see a pregnant woman with her pants worn below her belly for all to see. In the past this would not have been acceptable attire. The days of the stretch pants with the elastic tummy are totally gone though there are some ladies who prefer to wear more traditional clothing. In the 1920’s and 30’s and up until the 80’s woman would attempt to make their own maternity clothing as this was the time for nesting and the overall feeling of motherhood. Other maternity items are as follows: - smocks - stretch pants - maternity underwear - breast feeding bras - support hose These items are still being used as they were generations ago. In the 1970’s the smock took a turn at being the kind of top that everyone wore so no one knew if you were pregnant or not. This was a good idea for some. They were quite fashionable at that time.
