Man Western Jewelry
Q: I'm taking part in a game in my school on customs of western countries
and oriental ones. So I try to read as much as possible. However, there
is still some things make me wonder... One of them is:
Will a Thai girl wear a ring on her ring finger to indicate if she is
married?
A:It's not customary. If she does, it's because you asked her to. It will
never mean the same to her that it would to a western woman.
What does it mean to a western woman? I caught my man????
What does it mean to a western man? Don't touch or else???
My wife's wedding ring means the same to her that it would to a
western woman...It may not be customary but they quickly get the
idea...
But there's an emotional significance to the ring that a western woman will have,
born of living in a culture her entire life where that ring means
something particular, that a Thai woman does not have. It's similar to
the dedication to family that Thai people have and westerners don't (to
the same level) that westerners never fully understand.
My wife also wears a ring. But if she were to see me without my ring,
she would think nothing of it. (She probably wouldn't even notice.)
