Is There A Organization Like Canada Consolidate Debt In

Q: Ouch - that bad eh? In Canada there is an organization 'Credit Counselors of Canada' - or something like that. A non-profit organization that work with the banks, credit card co's and other creditors. They help you consolidate your debt and arrange fair payments and help you avoid filing for bankruptcy. Is there a similar organization in the states? In Canada it's a pretty big deal and hassle to declare bankruptcy maybe it's not in the states. Here there is no guarantee that you will be clear of all your debt anyway and your credit sucks from 7 years or something. Look in your yellowpages or government pages (bluepages?) under credit counseling - don't just rush in to bankruptcy - check out all your options first. If I can get a hold of an acquaintance of mine who does financial planning stuff I'll ask her if she knows of anything in the states. I'll get back to ya either way.

A: Well, I've calmed down a bit since I wrote that last night. I got pulled over on the way home from work for expired plates (which I can't reregister until I pay off traffic fines, mostly parking tickets-- I can't afford the fee to rent a space at work, ) and a suspended

liscence, due to not being able to pay off the prior ticket for having expired plates. All told, I have about another $300 in bills added on to my already snowballing debt, have lost 6 points on my liscense, and now have a mandatory court date. And I did it all without credit cards! I tried looking up help about a year ago, when I really started having trouble, and could only find places which dealt with credit card debt. I am thinking of visiting my credit union (which I trust more than my bank), and seeing what they have to say. (Come to think of it, I have my auto loan through them, something I probably should keep in mind.) I'm going to have to look into this some more. .
