Immigration Lawyer - Law School???

Q: Apologies if this is in the wrong section, but I am interested in switching careers from software development to law; in particular immigration law. I would like to operate on a pro bono basis. Can anybody advise what steps are required to practice immigration law? Do you necessarily have to attend law school for the 3/4 years? I am a UK citizen living in the US and would like to practice in the US.

A: You would have to be admitted to the bar of some state. After that, you could practice immigration law in any state, as immigration law is federal law. I'm not sure about this, but I think that some states allow persons to take the bar exam without having attended a law school, in other words, through some kind of independent study.
