How To Tell If A Diamond Is Real

Everyone knows that diamonds are a very precious stone. For many centuries they have been loved and treasured and desired. Diamonds are symbols of love and eternity. They have been given as engagement rings, for anniversaries and much more. When it comes to diamonds everyone has questions. The most common question people have in regards to diamonds is how to tell if a diamond is real. Well, the only sure way to do this is to have it appraised by a professional but there are also some other steps you can take to get a pretty good idea on your own at home. Keep in mind that all of these methods we are about to mention are not 100% effective in determining if you have a real or fake diamond but they may help you get an idea. As we mentioned the best way is to have an appraisal. You can also take it to a few different jewelers and ask for their opinions. Typically, they will take a look without charging you. Keep in mind however, that it is just a quick glance and will be their personal opinion. Another method you may have heard of is to scratch glass. While it is true that a real diamond will

scratch glass, you need to be aware that many fakes will also cut glass so this is not 100% reliable. Also, you can damage your diamond by trying this method. Another thing you can try is to put your diamond under a black light. A real diamond will have a blue fluoresce when put under a black light. However, this might mean that you have a poor quality diamond. Many high quality diamonds will not turn blue under a UV light so if it doesn’t turn blue, it doesn’t mean you have a fake. There are other ways to test your diamond and you may want to look into them and try several at home and see if you get the same results. But if you want to be completely sure, you should have it appraised.
