Heartburn Drug

Q: My wife is 7 months pregnant and is suffering from really bad heartburn. She has tried tagament, Rolaids and other over the counter drugs - to no avail! Sure, there are much worse things she could have right now - but it is really making her life miserable and keeping her up at night. Anyone have any helpful advice? can anyone in the group help me please?

A:There are a few things, but don't take the OTC drugs unless you cunsult a doc, and even then I would avoid them if at all possible. They can help symptoms temporrarally, but make them worse in the long run. Avoid foods that have a high fat or acid content, especially before lying down. Tomatoe products like spegetti sauce and pizza are especially irritating. Also, anything greasy, fried or fast food stay away from. Also, try not to eat anything

an hour before bed unless it is like, crackers or veggies with no spices. Even some fruits like oranges can be very irritating. Have your wife sit up for at least 1/2 an hour after all meal. Eat smaller amounts more often, instead of a couple of big meals. Also, a lot of people assume dairy will be soothing, but it can also cause heart burn. I know this doesn't leave much. But if she gets extreamly uncomfortable, go to the doc. I had really severe heart burn, and then it turned into terrible pains in my right side. It turned out that I had gallstones, which are very common in pregnant women. It was TERRIBLE! Luckily my husband knew how to be understanding and helped me through it.
