Heartburn And Diet
Q: I think I am having a mild flare-up after being pretty much free of problems
since 5 years ago(thanks to Imuran perhaps). I notice more heartburn now
despite the fact I am taking Pantoloc religiously. I wonder if food is
getting backed up into my stomach due to a more narrow small intestine. Does
this make sense? Sucks too cause I gained 8 pounds this year...afraid to
check it now
Can anyone suggest any other recommendations for me please?
A:I havd CD and I get heartburn whenever I eat very much grain products,
sweets or lactose. It doesn't occur right away like spicy food, tho.
It comes on later in the day.
I have probably had CD for about 30 years, but was only diagonosed about
5 years ago. I had the nonstop heartburn for at least 15 years. I also
started passing out and figured out that I was having low blood sugar
episodes. They were brought on by eating sweets and/or alcohol on an
empty stomach. There is a rebound effect where your body produces too
much insulin. It is called Hypoglycemia. When I adjusted my diet to
avoid the hypoglycemic problems the heartburn disappeared! I have since
noticed that whenever I succomb to temptation too much the heartburn
returns.
