Harrassment Prevention

Q: My question is as follows: Is there a group in Seattle or elsewhere, that will write a letter to the effect that "One of your female employees has complained to us about certain behavior that may be construed as sexual harrassment, if this continues she will begin seeking legal solutions... Protect yourself and your company by immediately ceasing this type of behavior...etc." Also, would this group be able to recommend to the parent company that they look at sexual harrassment prevention training for this particular location, to reduce their potential liability. If you know an organization that would be willing to do this, please respond via post or e-mail. Confidentiality MUST be honored or she won't go with it. Also, I have several lawyer friends that may be willing to write the letters, is this better?

A: A good place to start with is Seattle NOW, the local chapter of the National Organization for Women. Chris is in the office during many days and you can leave a message that she can phone you back about. Seattle NOW, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N., Room #222, Seattle WA 98103 Ph: (206) 632-8547 If you want to encourage letter

writing campaigns, it's best to show up at either the Sexual Harrassment Task Force meetings or the Action Meeting (the latter is the 4th Tuesday of every month at SCCC, phone the number above for current room & other info). I'd first stand up to the owner. Sexual harassment should not be tolerated regardless of what kind of negotiations your friend made. Perhaps the owner thinks he is owed something for this and HE'S NOT. I suggest that your friend contact the Washington State Human Rights Commission. They can advise her as to the best course of action to take. Also, she should document everything that is going on at work. I suggest that she keep a daily diary
