Gambling

What is gambling? The word gambling refers to the act of risking, or playing for stakes, to get a chance at gaining or winning a prize. Gambling can best be described as the opposite of insurance. With insurance, you have nothing to gain but you pay in with the hopes of not losing; to be insured against loss. With gambling, you pay in with the hopes of winning but a much better chance of losing and gaining nothing. There are many different types of gambling, both legal and illegal. The laws about gambling vary from state to state as well. Gambling can include anything from Bingo or state lottery to casinos, blackjack, slots and poker. Gambling also includes any form of betting, such as betting on horse racing and sports games. Gambling can be very profitable which is probably why people enjoy it so much. The downside to gambling is that it is so easy to lose. And the odds are really not in your favor. When you do win, you must take into account all the times you have played and lost to determine whether you have really gained anything in

the process. Think of the person who plays $1 lottery tickets every day for years. One day he finally wins $1,000. It may seem like a great deal getting $1,000 for a buck but did he really gain? Look back at how many dollars he must have spent before the day he actually won. There are some people who are very successful at gambling. Some people just seem to be born "lucky" or some have great skill at games like poker and blackjack. Most of the population, however, do not fair well at gambling. Sometimes people become addicted to gambling. Then it becomes a problem for them. It can be like a drug. People have lost their life savings, homes, cars and more due to gambling addictions.
