Florence Museum Guide

If you are traveling to Italy and want to visit a Florence museum, you may have a hard time deciding which of the many museums you would like to visit most. In addition to traditional museums and galleries, Florence is home to countless architectural and sculptural pieces that must be visited on their own. Countless art tourists visit Florence every year, and they must all make the decisions regarding what to see and what not to see. It can be very hard to do in Florence, which prides itself on being the birthplace of so many Renaissance masters. Included on the list of Florence natives are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Giotto. Knowing your specific artists of interest can help you decide which museums are must-sees. The Uffizi is one of the most famous Florence Museums. Conceived by Cosimo de Medici and actual built by his son Francesco, it was first used to house a collection of antique medals and famous portraits. As the gallery was enlarged, more and great Florentine and Tuscan paintings were brought into the museum, and now the Uffizi houses not only Florentine and Tuscan works, but also those by

Venetian painters and the German artist Durer. The Medici Chapels are also wonderful places to view great Florentine art. These chapels feature famous tomb sculptures by Michelangelo. The Bargello National Museum also has many Renaissance sculptures by Michelangelo, along with famed artists Donatello and Brunelleschi. If you want to see Michelangelo’s David, you will need to visit the Accademia Gallery. There, you will also be able to view Botticelli’s Madonna of the Sea. The Pitti Palace also is the home to several different museums, including the Silver Museum and the Gallery of Modern Art. These museums have large collections of the works of master artists Titian and Raphael.
