Cure For Acid Reflux

Q: I have had this battery acid feeling in my throat now off and on for a month. I started taking Prilosec OTC almost two weeks ago and last night I had the worst spell of acid in my throat. I tried taking Maalox and drinking some milk and nothing helped. This is the first time that I have had all day acid and not been able to get rid of it. Does anyone know of an Over the counter medicine that is especially good for acid reflux/acid in throat? I have already tried taking typical antacids like rolaids and Gas-X and of course the prilosec OTC. Or am I describing acid reflux disease and thus should go to the doctor. can anyone help me please!

A:it sounds like acid reflux. Prilosec OTC would be the best treatment. But it does take time to have an effect. If you have taken it for 2 weeks as directed and no help, then yes you should see a doctor. In the meanwhile, try sleeping with an extra pillow

to elevate the head and prevent nighttime acid from coming towards your mouth. You could also try "pepsid complete" OTC. The longer you wait to see a doctor, the more damage your acid is doing to your esophagus, so the sooner the better. contrary to popular belief, milk is not alkaline. milk is acidic...lactate..lactic acid, so you are just adding a weaker acid to your already very acidic gastic fluid. You are describing GERD or acid reflux as you suggest. This may also be caused by a hyatis hernia. The muscle that keeps acid in the stomach from getting out but allows us to swallow. You should see a Doctor. Temporary relief may come from Pepcid AC or some such acid control product.
