Credit cards are becoming ubiquitous all over the United States. Unfortunately, so is credit card debt. Many people get so excited by the spending power that a credit card bestows open them that they end up living way beyond their means. What they don’t realize is that the stuff they buy is not free and that sooner or later they will have to pay for it. By the time realization strikes, they are usually neck deep in credit card debt. The first step towards managing your credit card debt is to face up to the fact that you have a problem. No matter what you do, your problems with credit card debt are bound to continue unless you rein in your spending habits. Whenever you get the urge to pay for something with your credit card ask yourself whether you really need it. Learning to live within your means is the best way to avoid accumulating more and more credit card debt. The next step is to take a close look at your credit card debt. If you have multiple cards, consider transferring all your balance to the card with the lowest interest rate, if possible. This will give you a breather. If not, focus on paying of your minimum balances every month and on the cards with the highest interest rate, paying off a bit more

than the minimum balance so that you are reducing the outstanding principle as well. Keep doing this till you have paid off all your credit card debt. Remember that under no circumstances should you miss a monthly payment on your credit card debt. Make the repayment of your credit card debt your first priority. If it looks like despite this you still need help with your credit card debt, consider going in for some financial counseling. You may also want to speak to your credit card companies and find out if they are willing to adjust your monthly payments a bit. Credit card debt consolidation is also an option. However, before you go in for it make sure you are aware of what it involves.
