College Student Need Credit Card?v

Q: College student need credit card? My 19 yr old nephew is wanting to get a credit card for use when he leaves for college in a few weeks Ive told him its a BAd idea. That they are not only dangerous financially..... but will also just "complicate" his life up at a time when he should keep things simple and enjoy his college life and experiences. Do you all agree?

A: -Its getting harder and harder to get by without a "credit card" However It need not be a financal issue. Get a debit card. You have a "credit" look for things that require a credit card and a limit based on cash on hand so you dont over do the credit line. - I agree wholeheartedly with Arri's comment. How will responsible use of a credit card prevent him from doing all of that? Seems to me that having a credit card would _help_.

Try renting a car, reserving hotels or buying a plane ticket without one and see how "simple" it is. Sometimes the simplest way is not the best. College can be a great time for independence and freedom, but it's also a time to learn how to handle more personal responsibilities. Avoiding doing the latter doesn't strike me as a good preparation for adulthood. - Er...how much time did you think this stuff would take him? I barely spent 10 minutes per month going over my CC statements, but then, I didn't abuse it and always paid off the balance in full every month. It didn't keep me from getting an education, hanging out with friends, meeting new people, etc.
