Chronic Heartburn Causes

Q: I am a 52 year old male with severe heartburn every night. I have been to the doctor and all they did was look down my throwt to make sure I don't have cancer (I don't) and then give me a perscription for Nexium and later on for Prilosec. Neither of these work. I have stopped eating spicy foods, I don't eat before bed and I raised the front of my bed up off the floor. Has anyone else had this problem and found something that helped them? If am at my wits end. I am even afraid of eating now because of the hearburn I know I will get later on. Please give me some ideas here, I don't know what else to do cause my doctor won't help either. can anyone in the group help me please?

A:I would go to a different doctor, or demand that your present doctor look elsewhere for your problem. You need to get it under control or your going to have problems down the road. In addition to raising your bed you could try and raise your torso higher than your stomach by using a wedge shaped pillow. Also, stay off the coffee or alcohol. When you say you don't eat before going to bed, how long to you mean? You should allow at least two hours without eating before you go to bed and even then the meal should be none acidic and small. If you follow the source you will find a section on nighttime heartburn. You may want to try taking a digestive enzyme supplement each time you eat. They worked great for me. I was not digesting properly, and these enzyme supplements helped

my body completely break down the food I was eating and was causing my heartburn - I hardly ever get it anymore, even when I don't take my enzymes. Go to www.wellzymes.com and check out the product called Digestive Health and follow the directions on the bottle. You may also want to try Wellzymes Gastric Ease - I used it before as well. It has digestive enzymes with herbal extracts that help soothe the gastrointestinal lining - you can take those with your food or if you feel the burn coming on. Your doctor probably doesn't even know anything about enzyme supplements, and won't think they will work. Mine could have cared less when I told him how much they helped. They worked great for me.
