Canada Student Loan Options For Canadian Citizen Living
Q: I have recently moved to the US on a k-1 visa and I'm not sure how best to deal with my Canadian student loans. Being no longer a resident of Canada makes me no longer eligable for any kind of interest relief or debt reduction. However, it's going to be many months before I can even legally work in the US, so I have no income. My husband is therefore supporting both of us, on a fairly low income, plus has his own student loan payments to deal with, so he can't afford to pay mine. But the fact that I'm married doesn't lend me any sympathy in the lenders' eyes, since they'll still see his income as 'available income' for me to make payments from. As far as I can tell, I'm screwed. But there has to be a way to deal with this that doesn't ruin my credit. Does anyone know anything about loan consolidation that might be helpful in my situation? Or are there debt reduction options available, maybe ones they don't offer upfront, but that I could be eligible for even though I'm residing in another country? From what I've read, defaulting or filing for bankruptcy are not options. Seems like a sure way to screw your credit forever, and still have to pay it all, and more, in the end. But there has to be a solution...
