Business Degree Jobs?

Q: I am currently working on an Associates degree in Business Management. What kind of jobs can I expect to obtain? Are there any classes that I should take, that is not required for my Degree? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

A:I'd work on laying groundwork to move into some niche. Think about what interests you, what industry sectors various businesses are in, what local contacts you can exploit to get some real-world experience, etc. so you can figure out some part of the business to study that isn't management. Then, you can go for jobs in that industry with extra relevant background beyond generic management, and it is very much easier to manage people when you understand a bit about their actual job. I was kind of hoping you were doing this the other way around. That is, you know the kind of job you want, and you are out getting the training needed to get that job. There really is no set expectation of what kind of job you will end up with. I graduated Math/Computer Science, and I ended up working with a lot of english majors and liberal arts majors doing programming (at least in my first job). The bottom line is that reasonably smart people can do just about anything they want to. If you are headed towards a business career, try to figure out what is booming. That is where the money will be. In the 80's and 90's, that was Wall Street. Today, the financial markets are ghost towns, but Casinos and Hotels are booming. If you want to get into upper management, then look at what current upper managers have done, and duplicate it. That means transferring to a top business school for managerial accounting, then heading to Harvard

or Yale for an MB

A: There is one thing that will absolutely guarantee your future success. Get a part time job in sales while still in college. Preferably door to door or business to business where cold turkey calls are mandatory, followed by presentations, and closing the sale. Amway, Avon, Vacuum Cleaners, cemetery lots for pre-need sales, printers, T-shirt printers, anything! Once you learn how to prospect and sell anything you will never be without a job and you will be at the top of the list of any pile of resumes for the real choice jobs you will be looking for once you graduate from college and the school of hard knock selling.
