Alcohol Detox

Alcohol detox includes not only treatment for the dependence on alcohol, but also includes counselling sessions to help the patient overcome the psychological and physical dependence. The objective of such a program is to help the patient get away from relying on alcohol and to help reduce the withdrawal symptoms. At the same time, the program is designed to treat any existing medical or psychological illnesses. The short term goals are to get the person to stop drinking, while the long term goals are to help the patient remain alcohol free for the rest of his/her life. When a patient enters an alcohol detox program, he/she wants to get rid of the harmful addictive substances in the body. With alcohol, detoxification is necessary before and after the treatment in order to make sure that recovery takes place. As long as there are residuals of alcohol left in the body, the cravings will continue and recovery will be very difficult. The program should be conducted under the care of a doctor because without professional help it can result in serious physical, psychological and emotional damage. The withdrawal symptoms experienced in alcohol detox vary according to the individual's addiction to alcohol. Some of the symptoms are: * Sweating * Rapid pulse * Hand tremors * Insomnia * Nausea and vomiting * Anxiety * Hallucinations * Seizures Many of these symptoms can be quite severe because the alcohol has been in the body for so long

that when it is removed the body may react violently. Several different medical professionals are involved in alcohol detox. A medical doctor will be able to help the patient deal with physical symptoms of withdrawal and ensure that the patient is safe at all times. A nutritionist has to be involved to get the patient on the right meal plan to make sure that the body gets all the proteins, nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are necessary for recovery. A psychologist helps the patient with emotional problems as he/she moves through the detoxification process. All three specialists are equally important because neglecting any aspect of the program can be detrimental to the patient.
