Acid Reflux In Infants
Q: I am looking for information on swallowing disorders in infants. My
nephew has this problem along with a reflux problem and a milk
sensitivity. I am basically trying to help out my sister. Any
helpful information or websites ?
please help me.
A:How old is your nephew? My son developed a hyper-sensitive gag reflex
at about the time started seriously eating solid foods (around 9
months). He is now almost 2 and things are just now starting to get
better. This is not an acid-reflux problem (we had several tests done
to ensure this). It is mostly a psycho-somatic reaction to food being
in the back of his mouth. We've tried many behavioral approaches with
this, and he's also on Zantac to neutralize some of stomach acid so he
doesn't cause permanent damage to his esophagous. For older kids
(around 3) some speech therapy can help. Hopefully, he'll be over it
by then.
