Acid Reflux Home Cure

Q: I am having some problems with this problem. Can anyone have any treatments for this? Maalox and other stuff dont seem to work too well-I really need some other kinds of home cure.

A:Ginger is supposed to have the following effects: antiemetic/antinausea, antiulcer, antiinflammatory (by inhibiting arachidonic acid metabolism), antiplatelet and positive cardiovascular effects. It is also antipyretic and thermogenic, antimicrobial and antiparasitic, and has a few other effects, too. Pretty good herb all-around! It seems that ginger also increases bile secretion (in rats), and seems to stimulate gastric secretion whil ereducing pepsin activity (may make the problem worse if the symptoms are caused by under-acidity). It may slow digestion, too, and resist the GI effects of chemotherapy. According to my resources, ginger can be used long-term, but generally only needs short-term use for immediate symptoms. Ginger may enhance the bioavailability of other medications/chemicals and high doses can actually CAUSE heartburn and have a blood-thinning

effect. As for dosage, the recommendation is: 500-1000mg fresh root 3x per day. Dried root 500mg 2-4 times per day 500mg ginger tablets: one tablet 2-4 times per day 0.7-2mL per day of 1:2 liquid extract 1.7-5mL per day of 1:5 tincture As for peppermint oil, it would not be good for reflux. In one study of 27 subjects peppermint oil was administered and relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter occurred, causing euqliazation of intragastric and intraesophageal pressures. Reflux occurred in 25 of the 27 patients within 1-7 minutes of administration of peppermint oil. Sphincter relaxation only occurred for 30 seconds and was terminated by the normal peristaltic wave.
